The Harlem Renaissance was an African American literary, Intellectual, cultural movement, and ultimately an urban phenomenon OCCURRING during the early 19th century.
The movement, which began in Harlem, New York, is characterized by the numerous authors, poets, artists, and musicians who emerged from a largely segregated America to promote a more unified and positive culture amongst black Americans. Negro leaders, such as Marcus Garvey, W.E.B. DuBois, and Alain Locke created plans for black economic self sufficiency, political separatism, and cross national African consciousness. Although the movement ended with the start of the Great Depression, it left a lasting impact of African culture on America, and ultimately brought the issue of minority treatment to the forefront of politics.
