Visual artists of the Harlem Renaissance played a key role in depicting the "New Negro" of America. Along with other art forms of the time such as literature, music, and theater, painters like Malvin Gray Johnson, Laura Wheeler, and Palmer C. Hayden, amongst others, displayed bold, stylized portraits of African Americans during this period as well as recreating the every day life of African Americans. Sculptors such as Richmond Barthe, Sargent Johnson, and Augusta Savage also achieved brilliance with the use of clay, bronze, and wood to create representations of the New Negro.
